Buckhead Atlanta has scored a legendary fashion brand for its next construction phase, just as the upscale project opens its first shops.

San Diego developer OliverMcMillan has signed a lease with luxury French label Dior to open its first freestanding store in Atlanta.

The roughly 5,000-square-foot, two-story boutique will take a prominent spot along Peachtree Road and Bolling Way. Vertical construction is expected to start this fall on that parcel.

Dior represents a huge win for Buckhead Atlanta, the eight-block redevelopment of a former bar district in Buckhead that’s almost a decade in the making.

“Dior is the real deal — a true artisanal luxury designer,” said Atlanta developer Eric Weatherholtz, principal at Healey Weatherholtz Properties LLC. “Because of the importance they place on preserving their brand’s sanctity, gaining a commitment from a merchant like Dior is years in the making. Their opening further validates Buckhead as the South’s premier shopping district.”

Jeff Zeigler, senior managing director of retail services for OliverMcMillan, said Dior is one of the landmark tenants for the mixed-use Buckhead Atlanta.

“It’s a big deal for us,” Zeigler said during a Sept. 8 interview. “We’re incredibly enthusiastic to be welcoming a heritage brand like Dior to the development.”

Fashion design took a turn when Christian Dior launched his first collection in 1947 in Paris. His “New Look,” with rounded shoulders, a cinched waist and full skirt celebrated femininity and opulence, unlike other boxy styles of the era. It struck a chord and ultimately helped transform women’s fashion.

Today, the retailer produces women’s, men’s and children’s apparel, leather goods, fashion accessories, footwear, jewelry, perfume and cosmetics.

Select Dior products are currently sold in Saks Fifth Avenue at Phipps Plaza. But the nearest boutiques are in Miami, Washington, D.C., and New York City.

Dior will join 36 other confirmed restaurants and shops at Buckhead Atlanta, including newly announced locations of women’s apparel and accessories purveyor Alice + Olivia; clothing boutique Courage. b; and men’s clothing designer BONOBOS.

Eight retailers are expected to open on Sept. 18. More stores and restaurants are set to open throughout 2014 and 2015. Office tenants, including Spanx Inc., should occupy their space early next year.
